As I stepped off the bus in Glasnevin, the chilly winter air greeted me, but I was eager to explore the National Botanic Gardens. Our journey began at Mayor Square, where we boarded the LUAS tram to Abbey Street, followed by a short bus ride to Glasnevin. The excitement was building, and I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the gardens.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a comprehensive map of the gardens, which we eagerly snapped photos of to guide us on our adventure. The National Botanic Gardens sprawls across 19.5 hectares of land, nestled between Glasnevin Cemetery and the River Tolka. As we wandered through the gates, I was struck by the sheer diversity of plant life on display.

The gardens boast an impressive collection of plants and trees, meticulously labeled and cared for. We strolled through various sections, each showcasing unique species and habitats. The glasshouse was a highlight, with its regulated temperature and stunning array of palm trees and banana species. The vibrant greenery within the glasshouse provided a striking contrast to the winter-weary plants and turf outside.

As we walked along the well-laid pathways, I appreciated the thoughtful placement of concrete and wooden benches, perfect for resting and taking in the surroundings. Despite the chilly air, our walk was refreshing, and we were not alone in enjoying the scenery. Families, children, and couples were scattered throughout the gardens, all basking in the serenity of nature.

As I gazed upon the winter-dormant plants, I couldn’t help but imagine the vibrant colors and life that would burst forth with the arrival of spring. I left the National Botanic Gardens with a sense of wonder and anticipation, already looking forward to my next visit during the warmer months.
