It’s been over two weeks since I arrived in Dublin, and I’m excited to share some valuable lessons I’ve learned so far. From personal development to language skills and networking, here are some key takeaways:
1. Personal Development is Key
Regardless of where you are in the world, working on your personal development is crucial. It’s the same interpersonal skills that help you relate with people from diverse backgrounds. Focus on building your relevance and substance, and you’ll find that you have meaningful contributions to make in any conversation.
2. Language Skills Matter
Learning pleasantries in multiple languages can be a great conversation starter. With tools like Duolingo, Google Voice Translator, and Meta AI on WhatsApp, it’s easier than ever to communicate with people who speak different languages. I’ve found that even a simple “hello” or “thank you” in someone’s native language can go a long way in building connections.
3. Networking is a Skill
I’ve been using LunchClub, a social networking platform, to connect with people from around the world. This experience has prepared me to network in real life with individuals from diverse backgrounds. So far, I’ve met people from Brazil, France, India, and more, and we’re exchanging contacts.
Bonus Thought: Think GLOCAL
To be a global player, you need to be interested in and working on issues of global concern. Whether it’s environmental sustainability, economic development, health, or mental health, there are issues that need to be addressed in every locality. Remember, the world is a global village, but don’t forget that wherever you are is part of that village. Think impact, and don’t wait until you travel.
In conclusion, personal development, language skills, and networking are essential for building meaningful connections in today’s global village. Keep an eye on my Facebook page and blog mapledappa.com for more updates from my journey.
